Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine is also known as TCM, and consists of medical systems originating in China. It is well accepted in mainstream medical care throughout Asia, but is considered alternative in the West.

Background

TCM practices include herbal medicine, acupuncture, dietary therapy, and massage. Emphasis is also give to essential minerals and ph balance. Qigong and Taijiquan are closely associated. Modern TCM was systematized in the 1950s. Prior to this, Chinese medicine was mainly practiced within family lineage systems.

The philosophy of Chinese medicine derives from the same philosophy as Taoist and Budddhist thought. It reflects the belief that the life and activity of individuals have an intimate relationship with the environment on all levels. In the I Ching and other Chinese literary and philosophical classics, Chinese writers described general principles and their applications to health and healing.

Energy Based

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the concept that the universe is made of an energy called chi. The human body is a small universe unto itself, and is a complex system of subsystems of energy and matter that work together for health and well being. The five elements (metal, water, wood, fire, and earth) play an integral part in TCM, as well as the meridian channels and chi.

Synergy Between East and West

Most Chinese, in China as well as other countries, see no conflict between TCM and Western medicine. Western medicine is favored in crisis situations and emergencies, while TCM is the natural choice for maintaining health.
