Strange Loop

A strange loop, or tangled hierarchy, occurs when one starts at one place, and ends up at the same place, while moving up and down a hierarchical system. Douglas Hofstadter discusses this phenomenon in his book Godel, Escher, Bach and his 2007 book I Am A Strange Loop.

Just like Albert Einstein did not want anything to do with the concept of quantum entanglement, the idea behind a tangled hierarchy is very counterintuitive. We try to resolve a mystery from a logical or analytical basis, and we end up in an endless loop that doesn’t get us anywhere.

For example, let’s say that I tell you that all therapists are liars, and I happen to be a therapist. Am I telling the truth or lying to you? This is not something that you can figure out logically. Since I said all therapists are liars, and I am a therapist, then I must be lying. So if I am lying then the opposite must be true, that all therapists tell the truth. But then I am lying when I say all therapists are liars. So therapists can’t all tell the truth because they can lie. This goes on in an endless loop, and cannot be resolved.

The Mystery of Life

The same thing happens when we try to figure out logically what the game of life is all about. We end up in a loop (chasing but not catching the rabbit) that goes on forever. It gets very confusing. Many of the principles of quantum physics that give a scientific foundation for self discovery and transformation do not fit neatly into anyone’s set of perceptions and beliefs.

But at this point it is not necessary to have a neat little package of how things work. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. As we let go of many erroneous ideas and perceptions that we have picked up along the way, we are then able to access information from sources previously unavailable. This goes well beyond logic, and opens us to a whole new world of discovery.

We detach ourselves from this strange loop once we are able to truly know and understand that all our power resides inside of us this very moment. It is simply being blocked by our focus on false perceptions. We are each other’s mirror as we reflect back to each other thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that we see in others but not in ourselves. In this way we share knowledge, wisdom and insights with each other.
