Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Rational emotive behavior therapy, also referred to as REBT, resolves behavioral and emotional problems. It is a psychotherapeutic system developed by Albert Ellis, who was inspired by many of the teachings of the Greek, Roman, Asian, and modern philosophers. Originally called rational therapy, it was changed to rational emotive therapy in 1959, and then to REBT in 1992.

Background

It was one of the first cognitive behavior therapies (CBT), which was established about a decade prior to Aaron Beck’s cognitive therapy. REBT is actually based on several ancient philosophical traditions, such as Stoicism. Ellis indicated that REBT is a principle where outside influences do not affect a person emotionally, but rather the individual is affected by “his perceptions, attitudes, or internalized sentences about outside things and events.”

Stoicism can best be described by Epictetus, who wrote in the first century: “Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views which they take of them.” Simple and to the point; several centuries later Shakespeare emphasized the same view in Hamlet: “There’s nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.”

Simply put, REBT is based on a A-B-C model of change and disturbance. It’s a psychological model that states A, the adversity, is not the only factor that leads to C (consequences), which are dysfunctional emotions and behavior. There is also B (belief) that contributes greatly. B is what folks believe about A (the adversity) which can be a present, past or future event (external or internal).

If a belief is rigid, then a poor consequence is the result. More flexible beliefs lead to more constructive and liberating consequences. So it’s important for people to identify their rigid beliefs so that they can then begin D (dispute). When they challenge and question these beliefs, they are then able to distinguish them from more healthy and constructive ones, and begin the healing process.

REBT leads people to see that regardless of circumstances, they have a choice. For more in depth information on REBT check out the Albert Ellis Institute.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy is all about belief and perception, and the ways they influence our lives. They influence our thinking, and thinking influences our emotions and behavior. While little emphasis is placed on exploring the past, REBT concentrates on present moment perceptions and evaluations. The therapist seeks to empower the client to help himself or herself through future challenges and problems. Many kinds of conditions and problems, including hyperactivity, can be effectively addressed through REBT.
