Parenting Children
As far as parenting children goes, there is so much advice out there from every corner of the educational, therapeutic and self help circuits. Different parenting styles are suggested, and a myriad of parenting books are available. But is it working? In many cases the answer is a definitive Yes. But in many other cases we have a large group of disillusioned kids running around grasping at straws, and ending up with the end of a not so nice stick. Gangs, drugs, alcohol, physical and emotional abuse, broken homes, probation, unplanned pregnancies, and the list goes on and on. Having worked for many years with children with many of these challenges and circumstances, I can tell you straight up, that given a little proper guidance and some descent role models, these kids have a good possibility to turn things around. Of course, there will not be all successes, but as I always said to others about my work, “plant the encouraging seed, water it a little on a consistent basis, and don’t pre-judge.” You never know for sure in whom the seed will sprout. Hungry For Structure And Guidance Although a child will never admit it, they are starving for proper guidance, structure and boundaries. They hide all their fear and anxiety very well most of the time. But it does surface with bouts of anger and sometimes violence. Being lost without a compass in an uncertain world is not very inviting for anyone, much less an adolescent or young child. We as adults need to step up to the plate and provide the compass and the guidance. Basic Fundamentals Throughout all the literature on parenting children and the different parenting styles, certain basic fundamentals stand out. On other pages of this website under “Manage” you will find a few informative articles that cover things such as consistency, breaking focus, having positive expectations etc. The bottom line is that this is not brain surgery or some other task that takes years to acquire. Come from unconditional love, and apply a few of these strategies consistently, and you will see results.
