Neurolinguistic Programming
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is psychotherapeutic approach that ties in successful behaviors with the underlying patterns of thought. It is a system of alternative therapy that helps people become more self aware, communicate more effectively, and change their mental and emotional behaviors. Background Richard Bandler and John Grinder co-founded this system of assisting people in improving their lives. The term NLP was used in order to emphasize the connection between neurological processes, language, and patterns of behavior that have been programmed through experience. This is a goal oriented process that works to achieve specific objectives such as the elimination of phobias, depression, learning disorders, and psychosomatic illnesses. Where traditional therapies would take weeks or months to make progress, NLP often works after one session. The key emphasis is for self empowerment in developing the ability to override learned limitations. A person then is able to function more effectively in all aspects of his or her daily life. Neurolinguistic Programming has been embraced by hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, management consultants and trainers, personal development experts, and life coaches. Review this website for more specific information and resources. History When Richard Bandler was studying at the University of California, Santa Cruz, he was influenced by the work of Gestalt therapist, Fritz Perls. He then consulted with John Grinder, one of the school’s lecturers and a linguist, who joined his research efforts as they also observed therapist, Virginia Satir. From these observations, they produced a “meta model”, which was used to gather information, and then address and challenge a client’s language and underlying thinking. They also went on to develop other models and techniques such as reframing, anchoring, and representational systems. Neuro-linguistic programming has a psychotherapeutic focus that can be used to improve child behavior as well. NLP also has been adapted for persuasion and interpersonal communications in business, sports, negotiation, public speaking, team building and coaching. Its principles and exercises have had a positive impact in creating emotional and behavioral change.
