Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing developed and evolved from the data received from treating problem drinkers a few decades ago. This is a client centered approach that helps people change behavior by dealing with the ambivalence in their lives.

The Spirit Of It All

The spirit and style of this approach is as important, if not more so, than the actual techniques. Any desire for change must come from the client, and not dragged out of him or her. This must originate from the person’s own values and intrinsic goals.

Since the person is conflicted between two courses of action, each with its own set of pros and cons, the therapist or counselor helps most by leading the person to articulating both sides of the issue, and then coming to some sort of resolution which will trigger the change.

This is not about giving advice, but letting the person figure things out, and resolve their ambivalence. This is a subtle approach that can even use some therapeutic humor depending on the situation. This is a partnership relationship between the client and counselor.

Most importantly, this is an approach that monitors any resistance while affirming a person’s self worth, and accepting their freedom of choice. This website will provide a wealth of information and resources to explore this type of intervention. This system addresses a full spectrum of behaviors and mental health challenges, while using reflective listening to understand a person’s frame of reference.
