Mental Health Diagnosis Transformed
A mental health diagnosis creates a stigma that the person has some sort of personal weakness. There are so many misconceptions and fears around mental illness that people with such labels are treated differently. Stigma Whether the stigma is obvious or subtle makes no difference. This can result in the person feeling frustrated and ashamed, and treated differently at work, school, or any other area of life. Whatever the ramifications, putting a label on someone does have its limiting effects. Recent studies have shown that the general populace now is much more accepting of the use of antidepressants. Since most of these drugs are now prescribed by family practice doctors and general practitioners, it is thought that the stigma has lessened. But this is not necessarily the case. Transforming The Mental Health Baseline The majority of all psychiatric and psychological therapies have as their goal the absence of mental illness. Whether there is a bipolar disorder in children with bipolar symptoms, or any other diagnosis, the goal should be not merely the elimination of symptoms through drugs or any other therapy, but the creation of sustained, rich and vigorous emotional and mental health. Instead of relying on medications and therapies that have a so-so track record in addressing these issues, it is far more rewarding and productive to study and examine people who are way above the norm in terms of happiness, joy, and fulfillment. Finding out what makes these folks tick will provide some valuable insights. Recent discoveries in neuroscience and quantum physics provide the foundation for much needed change in our treatment methods and expectations. Neuroplasticity has shown how the brain can actually create new neural pathways and thus compensate for injury or disease. The brain has the ability to generate new neurons. If we don’t set our goals and expectations much higher, we will find ourselves in the unenviable position of bringing to life what Michelangelo so long ago warned us about:“ The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”
