Everyday Heroes

Everyday Heroes are all around us, but the majority of the time we never get to recognize their goodness and contributions. Allen and Violet Large from Nova Scotia certainly qualify, and have made a significant difference in the lives of many others. This Canadian couple won $11.2million on the lottery in July 2010, and then proceeded to give it all away to friends, charities and hospitals.

They have been married for 36 years, and moved from Ontario to Lower Truro, Nova Scotia in 1983 for a more relaxed lifestyle. Violet worked for cosmetic and confectionery firms over the years, while Allen was a welder.

They have been retired since 1983, and have a comfortable life. They had no interest in being millionaires or buying lavish things. Violet, who is 78, told the Toronto Star, “What you’ve never had, you never miss.” Allen remarked, “That money that we won was nothing; we have each other.”

Positive role models that exhibit these types of behaviours are what often go unnoticed, but it is this type of good behavior that contributes to transforming our world. There are many people like Allen and Violet around the world in all cultures and races that do the right thing on a day to day basis. As Violet said, “It made us feel good, and there’s so much good being done with that money. We’re the lucky ones. I have no complaints.”
