Dance Therapy

Dance therapy is a valuable modality that fosters physical, mental and emotional health. An understanding of the interactions of our mind and body leads to many valuable insights and healing. It affects changes in behavior, feelings, cognitive awareness, and body functioning.

History and Background

This type of movement therapy originated in the 1940’s. Marian Chace developed unique dance classes that gained the attention of psychiatrists in Washington, D.C.. Noticing that their patients were benefiting from Chace’s dance classes, they requested that she work on the back wards of St. Elizabeth Hospital with patients so disturbed, that they were unable to attend group sessions. This type of movement therapy filled the need for a non-verbal approach with these patients.

The American Dance Association, which was founded in 1966, is now international and has established standards and a code of ethics. Dance therapists receive in-depth education and training in psychopathology, human development, cultural diversity, as well as the many facets of the theory and practice of movement therapy.

In addition to people with psychiatric challenges, today this therapy addresses many varied health challenges and issues with people of all ages and backgrounds. These include physically abused children, children with autism and asperger syndrome, substance abuse issues, dysfunctional families, the elderly, eating disorders, learning disabilities, mental retardation, adhd behavior child modification, hearing impaired, suicide, as well as chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, AIDS, asthma, cancer, Alzheimer’s and others.
