Behavior Charts
Behavior charts are useful tools for the management and transformation of child behavior. They not only show you the progress of your child over time, but more importantly, you can see the up and down nature and plateaus involved once you begin a strategy, and stick to it consistently. Not A Straight Line Process Whenever you attempt to make any changes in your own or anyone else’s routines, you will meet with a certain amount of resistance. The amount will vary according to how long and how intense the habit is ingrained. Because of this resistance, you will initially experience an increase of the undesired behavior. Your child is testing you to determine if you are really serious. Maintaining consistency at this point, no matter how severe the storm, is absolutely critical. Bad behavior will decrease over time. Setting up a reward system where privileges are earned, rather than taken for granted, works remarkably well. And your child will learn to appreciate and feel good about this, once he or she buys into the program. Like I’ve said before, kids really do want limits and structure.
