Managing Bad Habits

Breaking bad habits is an integral part of managing child behavior. Becoming aware of the consequences we experience as a result of our choices is a critical first step. Habits are formed as a result of repetitive actions, and thus become involuntary responses. Awareness of our thoughts and actions will help break the cycle.

No Magic Bullet

Just as it has taken time to form the habit, it will take time and effort to change the habit from negative to positive. Regaining the ability to make conscious choices, rather than operating on automatic, is what we desire. As always, it’s simple but not easy.

What’s The Payoff

We first need to determine why we do what we do. There has to be some reward or payoff, or we would not mess with it. We may not always be conscious of the payoff, but if we continue to dig and question our motives, we will find it.

By looking at the tradeoff, or what we lose as a result of our choice, we can then consciously determine if we wish to continue along down that road. The key is to get yourself to actively choose which path you want to go down. When it’s on automatic, there’s no choice. But awareness brings things to light, and then you get to decide consciously.

You may still continue to stick with the bad habits, but the more you are aware and stay aware of what you are losing as a result, eventually the tide will turn. You then substitute more positive behaviors. With your kids, use a reward chart, and keep track of their progress as they get to earn meaningful rewards for their better choices. This is an aspect of positive discipline that really works. Click here to return to the Transforming Child Behavior Home page.
