Aikido Training

Aikido training is a form of Japanese martial arts that people can use to defend themselves while at the same time showing concern for the attacker’s well being, and protecting the attacker from injury. Having trained for several years in this art, I have been able to share the training with some of the children with whom I have worked.

As a result of diligent training, I have seen children develop self esteem and the elimination of child behavior problems. This art is all about being sensitive to one’s own and another’s energy, so that any attack can be redirected without direct force.

Background

Aikido was founded and created by Morihei Ueshiba (December 14, 1883 to April 26, 1969), also known as Osensei or Great Teacher. He blended his philosophy of peace and reconciliation with his martial arts training.

He developed this art in the late 1920’s through the 1930’s. He put together a combination of throws, joint locks, as well as training movements with weapons such as spears, short staffs, and the bayonet. But the main influence is the art of swordsmanship.

There is a very significant spiritual influence to this art by extending love and compassion to those who seek to do harm. One receives an attack, and harmlessly redirects it. Ideally, both receiver and attacker remain unharmed.

Many Styles

Aikido has many styles but the biggest organization is the Aikikai Foundation, based on Morihei’s teachings, and under the control of the Ueshiba family. Major styles today are run by separate organizations headquartered in Japan.

Training

Training involves both physical and mental fitness. One learns how to safely fall and roll, as well as relaxation, flexibility and endurance are taught. The use of coordinated whole body movement and balance is emphasized.

There are basic and advanced techniques as well as weapons training. Being able to relax both the mind and body under the stress of an attack is vital. Fighting proficiency is blended with the betterment of daily life.

Aikido training is a great martial art for children to learn not only self defense, but self control. Managing one’s thoughts and emotions is paramount in being able to successfully implement this art. Click here for the Transforming Child Behavior Home Page.
